Cucumbers, zucchini, summer squash

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) 25 seeds per pkg. – $3.00

 

280. Sweeter Yet slicing – 55 days  Purported to be better tasting and burpless than other varieties.  Multiple disease resistances, does well on trellises or on hot side of the house.  Sweet and long, best picked at about 10-12” long, 1.5-2’ diameter.  Produces throughout the season with lots of moisture. Sold out.

281. Poinsette slicing – 58 days.  REINTRODUCED!!  Limited offering – Shaped more like a field cucumber (slicing), this does well in the garden, offering long slicing cukes throughout the growing season, each about 6-8” long.

282. Early Green Cluster pickling cucumber – 63 days From the 1700’s, this variety is very drought tolerant and disease resistant.  Good for pickling, forming all the fruits at the ends of the branches.  Very rare. Not available.

283. Boston Pickling – 55 days  Productive pickling cuke with black spines.   Green fruit about 5-6” long.  Limited quantities, 20 seeds.

284. Beit Alpha – 63 days  A Middle Eastern variety that is good for slicing.  Productive and delicious.  Not available for 2012 due to crop failure.

285. Lyaluk – 45 days  Extremely early for the prairies.  Pickling cuke for small areas, as the plants are compact. Old Belarusian variety.  Limited quantities.

286. Mideast Prolific – 65 days An open pollinated variety that is known for producing many excellent slicing cucumbers about 7” long.

287. Parisian Pickling – 60 days  Was used for gherkins or cornichons when very small, and grows larger but with a definitely strange shape and can be used larger for slicing or pickling.  Rare variety.  Limited offering.

288.  Early Russian – 55 days  Slicing or pickling cucumber known for its earliness.  Black spines on green fruits.  Nice for prairies. Not available this year.

289.  Plump Pioneer – 55 days Pickling variety saved from Pioneer seeds, cucumbers are plump and shorter than true Pioneer types.  Not available.

290.  Marketmore 76 – 60 days.  Not available this year.  An open-pollinated slicer of good quality.

291.  Double Yield – 60 days.  Open pollinated pickling types that make good slicers as well if left to grow longer.  Two cucumbers are produced at every junction.  Very limited quantities (20 seeds).

292. – Long Green – 65 days. NEW!! Great heritage variety that produces long straight slicers.  Can be grown in a greenhouse for extended harvest.

293.  Straight 8 – 65 days. NEW FOR 2012!  The well-known standby of many prairie gardens, producing straight thick slicing cukes that can also be used in pickles.

 

294.  Armenian – 70-75 days.  NEW FOR THIS YEAR!  A heritage variety from the middle east.  A great slicer, the fruits are long, light grey and ridged.  Unique and different.  Limited offering.

Zucchini –

544.  Black Beauty Zucchini – 60 days.  Limited offering – 10 seeds.  Large dark green zucchinis that do well in the heat, drought or cold.  Flesh is firm and solid, ripening to darker orange if kept over winter.  Can be eaten raw, or canned, dried as chips, etc..

547.  Bread loaf zucchini – 68 days.  10 seeds per pkg.  Growing rounder and larger, these zucchini achieve the size of a large loaf of bread, more elongated than round, up to a foot in length.  Use young as regular zucchini.

553. Onyx Zucchini – 50 days from seed.  These fast growing zucchini are similar to black beauty, but not as dark.  Nice elongated fruits.  10 seeds per pkg.

557.  Mexican Round Zucchini – 70 days.  Small fruits are about 2 ½” round, little like the eight-ball squashes that you see in other catalogues, but not dark, striped with lighter strips.  Best eaten young and like other squash.  Limited offering of 10 seeds per pkg.

Other summer squash types –

551. Mandan Squash – 85 days.  Originally from Heritage Harvest Seeds, this is what she believes is the original Mandan Squash.  The fruits are flattish yellow with green stripes, up to 1 lb. in size, for fresh summer eating. Very ornamental later, can be used in fall decorative displays. Extremely rare. 10 seeds per pkg.

551. White Scallop Squash – 70 days.  Limited offering – 10 seeds.  Early and interesting, these flying saucer shaped light green summer squash ripen to an almost white color, 7-8” in diameter.  Plants are compact. Mom thinks they look like flying saucers due to their squat nature and deeply lobed exterior rim.  It has great taste as young squash like zucchini or use for baking when older.  This pre-1591 variety is also known as the Cymling, Custard Marrow, or Patisson Panache.

555.  Squash Mix – Edible summer and winter squashes, each individually marked, mixed in one package providing squash in all sizes, shapes, colors and tastes.  Sure to please and especially for seed savers to decide what they like.  All seeds are edible. 10 of each (summer and winter).  $4.00
